According to Dominic Williams, founder and chief scientist of DFINITY Structurally, the internet computer blockchain is unique because it runs at web speed. 

With today's internet, decentralized applications and cryptocurrencies are not fully "Decentralized" because they rely on storage and front-end user interfaces like mobile apps and websites. In summary, only the application layer are decentralized and tech giant controlling infrastructure and services can just exclude or ban cryptocurrencies from using their services: the market will instantly crash. 

That's the challenge, the internet computer is solving by creating a brand new internet stack not just the application layer.
